Most NFL stars do their utmost to make a positive impression in a contract year but Alshon Jeffery has broken all the rules this season. The Chicago Bears wide receiver is set to return from a four-game suspension in the near future but his presence might not make a huge amount of difference for John Fox’s side.
As of December 12the, the Bears are already out of playoff contention and supporters have placed a chunk of the blame on Jeffery’s shoulders after a disappointing campaign.
Friday was a rather slow news day, but there was still plenty to talk about. Dumervil remains the top free agent on the market since the contract/fax machine issue that forced the Denver Broncos to release him, and there were some more rumors surrounding him on Friday.
After 13 years as the centerpiece of the team, Brian Urlacher and the Bears are parting ways.
“We were unable to reach an agreement with Brian and both sides have decided to move forward,” Bears GM Phil Emery said in a statement. “Brian has been an elite player in our league for over a decade. He showed great leadership and helped develop a winning culture over his time with the Bears. We appreciate all he has given our team, on and off the field. Brian will always be welcome as a member of the Bears.”
“He’ll compete to be our returner,” general manager Phil Emery said Thursday from the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine, via the Chicago Sun-Times. “What he does beyond that depends on how he performs in that first role as a returner.”
When the Bears arrived at training camp before the season, one of the biggest questions was whether or not this was the last season Brian Urlacher would be in a Bears uniform. Both Urlacher and general manager Phil Emery refused to talk about the situation and vowed to leave all discussions of a contract until that upcoming offseason.
