Report: Tebow to work out for Pats

Patriots

Albert Breer

According to my old colleague Matt Hayes of the Sporting News, the Patriots are among five teams that have private workouts set up with Florida QB Tim Tebow.

Hayes has been around the Gator program for quite some time, so it's worth noting he also had the Browns, Seahawks, Redskins and Bills set to put Tebow through the paces. The Tebow camp has been pretty tight-lipped on specifying what teams are sniffing around the quarterback.

While most of the public returns on Tebow's Pro Day were overwhelmingly positive, and the improvements he's made over the last six weeks are certainly impressive, most scouts there will tell you that Tebow remains what he has been. An on-field enigma. Wrote about that today.

And yesterday, we also touched on some things in this space as to why the Patriots wouldn't be a great fit for Tebow. Accuracy and decision-making are paramount for a quarterback in New England's offense, and Tebow, by NFL standards, doesn't have either in spades right now. Maybe the latter can be taught with time, but the former usually isn't a learned skill.

That said, it's clear that Bill Belichick's always had a healthy curiosity about athletes like this one, and with the value the team puts on stretching the 53-man roster as far as it can, Tebow's potential to play other positions could buy him time to develop as a quarterback. And a place like New England, where he won't be pushed to play right away, is best for Tebow, no doubt. Contrary to popular opinion, Jacksonville would be a potential disaster, because of the high profile he would assume right away, and the push from all angles to get him on the field too early.
